Training Run -
It had rained all night and it was
still raining when seven wheelers turned up for a training ride, "but
at least it isn't cold" Phil reminded us. Jake and Roger set a brisk
pace and Mick, Nick, Phil, Lee and Simon were happy to follow on. Although the
rain stopped, copious volumes of water were thrown up from the road and we were
soon soaked even though every rider had mud guards.
After ten miles Jake's rear tyre
literally exploded with a load bang which blew out the side wall. An avid Blue
Peter watcher in his youth, Jake was able to fashion a repair from an old
washing up bottle and some sticky-backed plastic and was loath to heed any of
the "helpful" advice from fellow riders.
Jake turned back and then there
were six. After about 25 miles we'd all had enough and turned for home except
for Mick who went off on his own for more, and who knows, may even still be
going.
Andover Wheelers
Christmas run and Free Wheel event.
Nineteen riders met at The Folly
public house for the Andover Wheelers Christmas run on Sunday 22nd December.
Many had added a string or two of tinsel to their machines and Jake easily won
the prize (if there was one!) for the best dressed bike. Even our Honourable
Timekeeper had a two wheeled beast between his legs.
Ian Knight lead the way for the
next couple of hours which finished up at the start of the free wheel course.
Last year's winner (and the year before, and the year before and the year
before etc...) had the honour of going last as each rider tried more positions
than the Karma Sutra in an attempt to become aero-dynamic. With a good tail
wind Nick Adnitt held the club record for the furthest distance for about two
minutes until yep, once again Simon glided past to claim the victory.
Club members then retired to the
Weyhill Fayre for copious amounts of alcoholic beverage, hot roast potatoes and
hot mince pies and to make exaggerated predictions of record times for next
season. A great day to round off the year.
2002
It was a wet, filthy Sunday
morning, but hey, it IS supposed to be winter. The
The course included a couple of
features called "the wall" and "the corkscrew". The
corkscrew is probably quite good fun in the dry, just like a slalom but using
the high burms to zig-zig down, but in the wet I just locked the back wheel and
used one leg as a third point of contact and slid down. There were some long
ascents which was like riding up along a stream bed there was so much water. My
increasing lap times indicate more bike pushing as the legs tired and the
course got muddier after so many riders.
I had used all the adjustment on
the break cables by the end of the second lap trying to compensate for break
block wear but my brand new blocks were worn to the metal by the end of the
race and I had a gouge in the rim of the wheel.
Excellent fun and good winter
training and I succeeded in negotiating routes I wouldn't have attempted if it
were not a race course. Looking forward to the Salisbury Plain Challenge.

Crowthorne Woods -
In order to add a little variety
into the long, grey days of winter training, Nick and Charlie Adnitt and Emma
White entered the recent Gorrick MTB race. Having never competed in a full
blown MTB race before, the main objective was to gain experience and learn what
was expected. We turned up at about
We registered (having entered
earlier by post) and got our numbers. As Charlie's race was off at
Nick and Emma managed to get in a
practice lap and were impressed with the varied and imaginative course. Fast
descents down gravel tracks (big puddles at the bottom), single, winding
woodland track, twisting around trees, long, muddy climbs and some complicated
sections marked out with tapes.
Nick got back to the start with 10
minutes to go to prepare for the race and missed the start of the vets race by
a minutes or so. He charged after the pack and overdid the first lap by passing
five riders. By the second lap the course was cutting up after heavy overnight
rain and the muddy bits were hard on the legs. He started the third lap in 21st
place and although there was a lot more getting off, he finished 19th out of 31
in 2 hours 4 mins.
Emma did a couple more laps but
didn't bother starting with the race group.
It was a great day out, brilliant
fun and judging by how the legs feel, good training. It was well organised and
the course was well marked and well marshalled. An entry-level, Halfords own
make bike is not recommended!
Mountain bikers seem to be a bit
conservative as far as dress sense is concerned and Nick did feel a bit
conspicuous in the Mapei 2002 road gear!

braved it and entered the Facombe 100km Audax event on Saturday 5th October.
We couldn’t have asked for better
weather, a fine sunny day and in October as well!!! We left the HQ with a few
fellow Salisbury Road Club members, after numerous cups of free tea, which kept
Stuart happy. We got to the first climb after 1ml or so and thought that was
tough, if only we knew what was in store for us still to come. Up and down more
hills we went, looking forward to the lunch stop. We had to climb Combe Jibbet
at one point, then to our surprise we had to circle round and climb it again
but the tea stop was just after it so we didn’t mind so much. An excellent
lunch was put on with beans on toast being the main interest and plenty of free
tea and cakes to fill us up, believe me we needed it. The 2nd part was more or
less the same as the morning but a little easier. We did have to climb Conholt
with 10 km to go but compared to the other big climbs in the morning it didn’t
feel to bad. We finished after 4.5hrs of riding and feeling very tired. We
topped up our energy stores with some left over rice pudding and tea, thanked
the organisers and went on our way.
It was an excellent event and
would advise anyone to go along and have a go at an Audax, it beats going out
on the same roads all the time and surprisingly the route card was very easy to
follow.
Andover Wheelers
Weyhill Weekend 10 and 25 mile open time trials
There were some fast times in the
10 as the weather proved favourable with a light easterly breeze and warm
sunshine.
Ray Hughes went under the 20 min barrier twice in winning the tanden event and
then the vets 40 to 49.
Also there was a national age record set by Barbara Braithwaite Sotonia CC when
she recorded 29.24 (80 years of age!).
There were alot of pb's and seasons best done in the 10.
The 25 proved to be a tougher morning. The wind was a north easterly which got
stronger as the morning went on. This did not seem to help the riders in either
direction.
There were many compliments of the running of the event with there being over
400 entries for the 10 alone, it was a mamoth task to promote, and the general
feedback was very positive with lots of people vowing to be back next year.

2002 Evening League
For the 2002 season the club will
be running a League for the Tuesday evening events for first claim members. The
aim of this league is to give riders a bit of recognition that would not
normally receive it and to encourage riders to turn up. The league will run as
follows: Each rider will be put in a category, Elite (Only for fun), A, B
groups respectively. The points will be even for each group, 20 for first in
each then 18, 16, 14, 13, 12, 11,10, etc. If for some reason you do not finish
the race as long as you start you will receive the next lowest amount of
points. The same goes for the tandem it will receive the next amount of lowest
points in there group.

The Tour of
Warickshire
Phil, Eric and Stuart had a go at
the 2-day, 4-stage event, which covered more than 190kms.
The trio had a very relaxed attitude
to the weekends race and had a good laugh at the expense of Eric's Y-fronts,
but when he pined his number on the front of his shirt instead of the back and
walked right across the car park in full view of all the competitors, we had to
snigger. Eric had the last laugh though when he kicked Stu's behind in the
Prologue. The RR went well with plenty of attacks from Phil and Stuart. Eric
done very well, managing to stick in until the 2nd last lap but carried on to
finish. Phil finished an excellent 28th in the sprint, and Stu unfortunately
punctured with 3 laps left, he then got given a wheel which had a slow puncture
and had to wait for a full lap to come back round before he got another wheel
but he also did finish.
The TT went well but Phil's legs where
feeling very tired from the previous days racing which is understandable
considering the amount of work he done in the RR.
The 2nd RR was a killer, 2 hills
fairly close together, they weren't to big but enough to make your legs hurt.
Unfortunately Eric and Phil got dropped on one of the climbs, Eric continued on
but Phil's ankle was playing up so he took the sensible decision to pull out of
the race. Stu was up there but unfortunately kept missing the breaks and it
wasn't through lack of trying, at one point he was off the front for a lap (6
mls). 18 riders where away from the main pack with half a lap to go and guess
what? Yip another puncture and he made sure he got a good one this time. And
again he carried on to the finish.
Even though they had some
punctures and tired legs the weekend was a success and the trio is looking
forward to another 2-day event

As we drove down the hill which we
would be racing up in less than 45 minutes time, me (Stuart Thompson) and Phil
Jacobs had to laugh and say 'No way will we manage up that!!!' And what a hill
it was!!!! We did manage the mile climb and we did it 6 times to our amazement
despite silly billy's putting attacks in on it and dodging crashes (10 people
went down at one point).
About 10 riders got away on the
3rd lap and stayed away for the rest of the race but we were happy sitting in
the pack and working hard up the hill. With the aid of Simon Smith from
Salisbury R.C. we all worked well together.
The 6th lap came and we where all
glad it would be the last time up the hill but we had to try to save some
energy for the sprint up the top. We got to the top and no chance any of us
where sprinting, the hill had squeezed every bit of energy out of us. We all
came in around the 20th place mark (They didn't get everyone's place), Simon
first, then me and Phil followed, all within a few bike lengths of each other.
I think we'll all stick to circuit races from now on!!!

Unfortunately on the way up to the

purchased from "Honest Mick Risdale - second hand cycle parts".
Although the proprietor was present at the time, unfortunatley the Mick Risdale
money back guarantee had expired only hours earlier. A quick phone call home
had the support crew arrive with a substitute wheel but due to a
misunderstanding, this was taken off the turbo-trainer bike so had not actually
revolved for some time. It was quickly put on the bike but then found to be
punctured. Luckily Mick changed the tube faster than a Ferrari pit crew and we
just made the start.
Sadly the front wheel rubbed on
the brake block for the whole race and Mick (who started a minute behind)
cruised by with five miles to go.
