Training Run - Sunday 29th December 2002

It had rained all night and it was still raining when seven wheelers turned up for a training ride, "but at least it isn't cold" Phil reminded us. Jake and Roger set a brisk pace and Mick, Nick, Phil, Lee and Simon were happy to follow on. Although the rain stopped, copious volumes of water were thrown up from the road and we were soon soaked even though every rider had mud guards.

After ten miles Jake's rear tyre literally exploded with a load bang which blew out the side wall. An avid Blue Peter watcher in his youth, Jake was able to fashion a repair from an old washing up bottle and some sticky-backed plastic and was loath to heed any of the "helpful" advice from fellow riders.

Jake turned back and then there were six. After about 25 miles we'd all had enough and turned for home except for Mick who went off on his own for more, and who knows, may even still be going.

Andover Wheelers Christmas run and Free Wheel event.

Nineteen riders met at The Folly public house for the Andover Wheelers Christmas run on Sunday 22nd December. Many had added a string or two of tinsel to their machines and Jake easily won the prize (if there was one!) for the best dressed bike. Even our Honourable Timekeeper had a two wheeled beast between his legs.

Ian Knight lead the way for the next couple of hours which finished up at the start of the free wheel course. Last year's winner (and the year before, and the year before and the year before etc...) had the honour of going last as each rider tried more positions than the Karma Sutra in an attempt to become aero-dynamic. With a good tail wind Nick Adnitt held the club record for the furthest distance for about two minutes until yep, once again Simon glided past to claim the victory.

Club members then retired to the Weyhill Fayre for copious amounts of alcoholic beverage, hot roast potatoes and hot mince pies and to make exaggerated predictions of record times for next season. A great day to round off the year.

2002 West Drayton MBC Ash Ranges 24 November 2002 - by Nick Adnitt

It was a wet, filthy Sunday morning, but hey, it IS supposed to be winter. The Ash Range course is off junction 4 of the M3 near Aldershot. The route to the start was well sign posted and despite the weather there was a good turnout. Did about a mile of the course and got back to make the start of the veterans race. Still being a beginner I sat back at the start and followed the pack.

The course included a couple of features called "the wall" and "the corkscrew". The corkscrew is probably quite good fun in the dry, just like a slalom but using the high burms to zig-zig down, but in the wet I just locked the back wheel and used one leg as a third point of contact and slid down. There were some long ascents which was like riding up along a stream bed there was so much water. My increasing lap times indicate more bike pushing as the legs tired and the course got muddier after so many riders.

I had used all the adjustment on the break cables by the end of the second lap trying to compensate for break block wear but my brand new blocks were worn to the metal by the end of the race and I had a gouge in the rim of the wheel.

Excellent fun and good winter training and I succeeded in negotiating routes I wouldn't have attempted if it were not a race course. Looking forward to the Salisbury Plain Challenge.

Gorrick MTB Race - Crowthorne Woods - Sunday 10th November 2002

In order to add a little variety into the long, grey days of winter training, Nick and Charlie Adnitt and Emma White entered the recent Gorrick MTB race. Having never competed in a full blown MTB race before, the main objective was to gain experience and learn what was expected. We turned up at about 8:45 and parked at the end of a long muddy track.

We registered (having entered earlier by post) and got our numbers. As Charlie's race was off at 9:30 he had little time to warm up and also lost the lower jockey wheel from his gears. After some quick repairs he lined up against the best display of state-of-the-art cycling kit I'd seen in a long time. In fact most riders were astride some pretty impressive (and no doubt expensive) machinery. At the gun Charlie decided to let the fast guys go and having not ridden a practice lap, watched the riders in front. Although not exactly an entry level bike, without front suspension he was clearly disadvantaged and on the second lap he'd lost all the ball bearings in the front wheel and the derailleur became tangled in the rear wheel spokes. The bike was just not up to the job and he had to walk the last mile or so to finish 10th out of 12 riders.

Nick and Emma managed to get in a practice lap and were impressed with the varied and imaginative course. Fast descents down gravel tracks (big puddles at the bottom), single, winding woodland track, twisting around trees, long, muddy climbs and some complicated sections marked out with tapes.

Nick got back to the start with 10 minutes to go to prepare for the race and missed the start of the vets race by a minutes or so. He charged after the pack and overdid the first lap by passing five riders. By the second lap the course was cutting up after heavy overnight rain and the muddy bits were hard on the legs. He started the third lap in 21st place and although there was a lot more getting off, he finished 19th out of 31 in 2 hours 4 mins.

Emma did a couple more laps but didn't bother starting with the race group.

It was a great day out, brilliant fun and judging by how the legs feel, good training. It was well organised and the course was well marked and well marshalled. An entry-level, Halfords own make bike is not recommended!

Mountain bikers seem to be a bit conservative as far as dress sense is concerned and Nick did feel a bit conspicuous in the Mapei 2002 road gear!

Andover Wheelers Duo Audax Team!!!

Eric Wilcox and Stuart Thompson braved it and entered the Facombe 100km Audax event on Saturday 5th October.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather, a fine sunny day and in October as well!!! We left the HQ with a few fellow Salisbury Road Club members, after numerous cups of free tea, which kept Stuart happy. We got to the first climb after 1ml or so and thought that was tough, if only we knew what was in store for us still to come. Up and down more hills we went, looking forward to the lunch stop. We had to climb Combe Jibbet at one point, then to our surprise we had to circle round and climb it again but the tea stop was just after it so we didn’t mind so much. An excellent lunch was put on with beans on toast being the main interest and plenty of free tea and cakes to fill us up, believe me we needed it. The 2nd part was more or less the same as the morning but a little easier. We did have to climb Conholt with 10 km to go but compared to the other big climbs in the morning it didn’t feel to bad. We finished after 4.5hrs of riding and feeling very tired. We topped up our energy stores with some left over rice pudding and tea, thanked the organisers and went on our way.

It was an excellent event and would advise anyone to go along and have a go at an Audax, it beats going out on the same roads all the time and surprisingly the route card was very easy to follow.

Andover Wheelers Weyhill Weekend 10 and 25 mile open time trials

There were some fast times in the 10 as the weather proved favourable with a light easterly breeze and warm sunshine.
Ray Hughes went under the 20 min barrier twice in winning the tanden event and then the vets 40 to 49.
Also there was a national age record set by Barbara Braithwaite Sotonia CC when she recorded 29.24 (80 years of age!).
There were alot of pb's and seasons best done in the 10.
The 25 proved to be a tougher morning. The wind was a north easterly which got stronger as the morning went on. This did not seem to help the riders in either direction.
There were many compliments of the running of the event with there being over 400 entries for the 10 alone, it was a mamoth task to promote, and the general feedback was very positive with lots of people vowing to be back next year.

It was a bright and sunny morning, not a cloud in the sky and only a breath of wind, perfect conditions except for the cool temperature which may explain the somewhat slower times. Cool, dense air is a lot more difficult to shift than warm air which has the benefit of the sunshine through the day. (well that's my excuse!)

For the 2002 season the club will be running a League for the Tuesday evening events for first claim members. The aim of this league is to give riders a bit of recognition that would not normally receive it and to encourage riders to turn up. The league will run as follows: Each rider will be put in a category, Elite (Only for fun), A, B groups respectively. The points will be even for each group, 20 for first in each then 18, 16, 14, 13, 12, 11,10, etc. If for some reason you do not finish the race as long as you start you will receive the next lowest amount of points. The same goes for the tandem it will receive the next amount of lowest points in there group.

Reading CC 50 mile open TT H50/14 - Sunday 16th June 2002

It was a 4:15 am early start for Mick Risdale, Eric Wilcock, Phil Jacobs and Nick Adnitt to get to the start of the Reading CC 50 mile TT on the A34 starting at Didcot. First off was Nick at 05:49, straight into a 20 mph head wind on the first 5 mile leg to West Ilsley. It was down to 10 mph on one gradient, but 40 mph (free wheeling) after the turn. Phil started 3 minutes behind and passed Nick after about half an hour. Eric set off at 05:59 and Mick at 06:14 and we all enjoyed the 25 mile tail wind leg up the A34 to about 2 miles before the M40 junction. It was a different story for the final 20 miles. The wind sapped the energy from the legs as riders attempted to present the smallest and most aerodynamic profile to the wind. The official results aren't published yet but Phil did a 2:01:59, Eric 2:06:?, Nick 2:16:27 and Mick 2:16:56.

Salisbury Road Club 25 P618c - Thursday 13 June 2002

Nick Adnitt and Mick Risdale got some sneaky practice in for the AW 50 mile club championship TT scheduled for Thursday 27 June. A strong trail wind helped riders to the A303, and then it was cross winds to the Park House turn and back and a head wind up the Salisbury road to the finish at Middle Wallop. Nick beat Mick by about 3 minutes, but the wily old fox Risdale tends to save himself for the open events for revenge.

The Tour of Warickshire

Phil, Eric and Stuart had a go at the 2-day, 4-stage event, which covered more than 190kms.

The trio had a very relaxed attitude to the weekends race and had a good laugh at the expense of Eric's Y-fronts, but when he pined his number on the front of his shirt instead of the back and walked right across the car park in full view of all the competitors, we had to snigger. Eric had the last laugh though when he kicked Stu's behind in the Prologue. The RR went well with plenty of attacks from Phil and Stuart. Eric done very well, managing to stick in until the 2nd last lap but carried on to finish. Phil finished an excellent 28th in the sprint, and Stu unfortunately punctured with 3 laps left, he then got given a wheel which had a slow puncture and had to wait for a full lap to come back round before he got another wheel but he also did finish.

The TT went well but Phil's legs where feeling very tired from the previous days racing which is understandable considering the amount of work he done in the RR.

The 2nd RR was a killer, 2 hills fairly close together, they weren't to big but enough to make your legs hurt. Unfortunately Eric and Phil got dropped on one of the climbs, Eric continued on but Phil's ankle was playing up so he took the sensible decision to pull out of the race. Stu was up there but unfortunately kept missing the breaks and it wasn't through lack of trying, at one point he was off the front for a lap (6 mls). 18 riders where away from the main pack with half a lap to go and guess what? Yip another puncture and he made sure he got a good one this time. And again he carried on to the finish.

Even though they had some punctures and tired legs the weekend was a success and the trio is looking forward to another 2-day event

12/05/02 Belmont RR 55 mls 2/3/4 Cat

As we drove down the hill which we would be racing up in less than 45 minutes time, me (Stuart Thompson) and Phil Jacobs had to laugh and say 'No way will we manage up that!!!' And what a hill it was!!!! We did manage the mile climb and we did it 6 times to our amazement despite silly billy's putting attacks in on it and dodging crashes (10 people went down at one point).

About 10 riders got away on the 3rd lap and stayed away for the rest of the race but we were happy sitting in the pack and working hard up the hill. With the aid of Simon Smith from Salisbury R.C. we all worked well together.

The 6th lap came and we where all glad it would be the last time up the hill but we had to try to save some energy for the sprint up the top. We got to the top and no chance any of us where sprinting, the hill had squeezed every bit of energy out of us. We all came in around the 20th place mark (They didn't get everyone's place), Simon first, then me and Phil followed, all within a few bike lengths of each other. I think we'll all stick to circuit races from now on!!!

Let's catch up on the Tandem

Salisbury Road Club 25 mile Time Trial - Thursday 2nd May 2002

It was perfect weather conditions, especially for early May for the 7 o'clock PM start of the Salisbury RC 25 mile TT. It was warm, bright and sunny with a light breeze. There was a good turnout of riders of which 4 were Andover Wheelers.

Unfortunately on the way up to the start Nick snapped a front wheel spoke of the 18 aero-spoke wheel he had recently purchased from "Honest Mick Risdale - second hand cycle parts". Although the proprietor was present at the time, unfortunatley the Mick Risdale money back guarantee had expired only hours earlier. A quick phone call home had the support crew arrive with a substitute wheel but due to a misunderstanding, this was taken off the turbo-trainer bike so had not actually revolved for some time. It was quickly put on the bike but then found to be punctured. Luckily Mick changed the tube faster than a Ferrari pit crew and we just made the start.

Sadly the front wheel rubbed on the brake block for the whole race and Mick (who started a minute behind) cruised by with five miles to go.

Niel of course won in a time of 52:18 (PB) Wheelers times were: Jake - 56:40, Jason - 1:04:04:38, Mick - 1:04:nn, Nick - 1:06:17

Stuart Thompson turned up at the finish and was doubly fed up because no one had turned up for the Thursday night chain gang, and he'd missed a good opportunity for a fast 25 time.

Salisbury 10 Mile Time Trial P610c, Thursday 25th April 2002 (By Steve Bungay)

With Andover riders building on good early season road racing and time trialing success, six local riders rode in the Salisbury 10 mile Time Trial, held on the P610c course between Thruxton and Andover. In bright and windy conditions, Neil Coleman (VC St Raphael) was the clear winner, finishing with an average speed of 29.6 mph in a time of 20 min 16secs. Stuart Thompson (Andover Wheelers) recorded a personal best time, finishing 2nd in 21:35s, closely followed by Will Grainger (Andover Wheelers) 21:49s, Steve Bungay (www.bikeshop.uk.com) 22.59s, and Nick Adnitt (Andover Wheelers) 24.35s. Mick Risdale (Andover Wheelers), snapped a bolt in his saddle a mile from the finish and was unable to finish.

25 mile Club Tandem record broken

Simon and Lee broke the club record for 25 miles on a tandem whilst winning the Reading CC 25 on the H25/1 at Aldermarston. They recorded 53.51 taking 32 seconds off the previous record held by themselves. They won the event by 28 seconds from Steve Brown and John Charman of the BJW which takes them to 6 wins from 6 events this season!!

Sunday 14th April Oxford City R.C. 28.5 Hilly T.T.

Once again the young flying Scotsman (not) was representing the club on a fresh morning, in the open Oxford City R.C. Hilly T.T. on the H29/15 course near Whitney. The course suited Tinker Thompson down to the ground with the rolling hills, long drags and the twisting bends which could get a good sprint out of. He finished 16th overall with a time of 1.16.22, just under 8 mins from the winning time.

Monday 1st April Alton C.C. Hilly 37.3ml T.T.

Stuart Thompson competed in the Alton Hilly T.T. Lucky for him he had Pete Pickers as his minute man. He kept pickers in his sight thinking he was holding the minute gap but at the turn Pickers was about 30secs up on Thompson. The long distance event took its toll on Thompson on the return but did managed a 1.32.29 which was good enough to put him in 10th place out of 29 starters.

John Martin also entered but due to some silly excuse did not manage to start!!! This is his excuse- "My tooth blew up to the size of a small golf ball and the emergency dentist had to slice it with his scalpel..........ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! With no injection, what a butcher!! So I wasn't feeling quite right to say the least."

Well I think we can let him off with that one.

Have they peaked too soon?

Simon and Lee have scored two more wins in the last two weeks. They won the East Dorset CA 27km tandem TT last week in a time of 38.20s. They beat Steve Brown and John Charman by 1.52s on a tight and twisty cicuit that was not tandem friendly.

They then beat Steve and John today in the Bournemouth Arrow 10 at Poole in a time of 21.11 to their 21.20.

This takes Simon and Lee to 3 wins from 3 starts this year. Jason Eady also rode today and done 23.46 in the solo. John Martin and Will Grainger were dns.

Friday 29th March 2002 at Castle Combe.

Phil had a good result and finished 5th in the sprint finish and Stewart finished in the middle of the bunch somewhere out of a field of 55 riders in the E/1/2, 50kms. Eric also had a storming ride in the 4th cat race, he was in for a top 10 placing but unfortunately got knocked off his bike with about 100mtrs to go. He is OK apart from a few grazes and hopes
to stay on his bike for the end of the next RR.

Nick saw Eric at the bike shop, very impressive dressings to elbow, thigh and leg, acute "gravel rash". Eric was more annoyed about the dent to his top tube!

VC Venta - Thruxton. Maintaining his impressive early season form, James Taylor (City of Edinburgh RC-Clarke Contracts) won the feature race in the VC Venta meeting on the Thruxton motor racing circuit near Andover, Hampshire. An early break of 11 riders stayed away to the finish, with Taylor taking the sprint from Dave Baker (PCA-Cicios Uno) and Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow). Former international rider Ben Luckwell (FS Maestro) from Bristol, originally part of a small break, stayed clear by himself to win the third category race. - Cycling Weekly 9/3/2002

Sunday 10th March 2002

Salisbury 25 mile hilly club time trial. It was a time trial of two halves! A strong, gusty head wind made the going very hard on the road out to Sixpenny Handley roundabout for the nine riders who turned up for the start at Odstock Hospital and it's doubtful if any rider used the large chainring even going down hill. The return journey was a real treat and made the hard slog up Coombe Bisset hill well worth it. It was like being "shot from a gun" with long stretches of 40 mph+ and as much as 15 minutes quicker than the journey out. Fastest time was 1:07:02 recorded by Dan Webber (Salisbury Road Club). Nick Adnitt went 12 minutes quicker than last year on the same course, in a time of 1:16:45 and Jonnie Martin came in at 1:18:29. Will Grainger - you can run but you can not hide!! Will's recent performances at a couple of Antelope RT events have been discovered on the WWW.

First the Antelope RT Open 10 which was held on course H10/5 Swallowfield Bypass. The weather was blustery with the wind mostly across the riders on their way up and down the A33 South of Reading. A decision was made during the morning to delay the start of the race by 30 mins to avoid a clash with the 23000 fans heading to watch Reading in their top-of the table match against Brighton at the nearby stadium.

Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) recorded fastest time in the tough conditions at 21:42 and Will came 6th in 24:10.

Also in the Antelope RT 25, Ray Hughes won in 00:56:34 and Will came 7th in 01:03:32.
