A recent Salisbury club time trial
on the A303 Andover/Parkhouse 25 course was dominated by AW riders who
outnumbered the host club. It was a blustery evening with a strong headwind
reducing speeds to 12 mph going up the hill towards the Parkhouse turn. However
riders were rewarded with a constant 28 - 36 mph+ return leg to Andover. Phil
Jacobs completed a maiden tandem ride on the back of Ian Knight and recorded a
respectable time despite a last minute chain replacement and not being able to
change to the large chain ring. Look out Simon and Lee!

50 starters lined up for the 70
mile endurance Surrey League Road Race at the weekend including Stuart
Thompson. The course was fast with only 4 small sharp climbs but they would be
enough to tire the riders out over the 6 lap long distance race. Stuart being
his usual aggressive self had a go for a break as soon as the race started but
only managed to stay away for 3 miles or so. There were plenty of attacks with
riders staying away for quite some time, including Stuart getting away with
another 6 riders for half a lap (6 miles), but all where unsuccessful. The
finish sprint was on a flat road which suited Stuart well coming in 6th place.

It takes a bit of time but he's worth waiting for!
Phil Jacobs and Stuart Thompson
competed in the Mountbatten Centre fast and furious Circuit race on Sunday the
16th of January. The hammer was down right from the word go with Rowan Horner
doing his usual early attack. Stuart went for a few attacks but always got
reeled back. Phil was just happy to sit in and hopefully finish in the pack. A
few of the Elite riders managed to lap the field to secure a top placing within
the first 20 laps. At one point Stuart managed to get away for 4 laps and was
quietly impressed when he heard over the speaker ‘There's Stuart Thompson of
the Andover Wheelers having a go now’ and he mentioned his name 2 or three more
times. His glory wasn’t long lived, the pack came storming past him and he
couldn’t get back on so he jumped onto one of the trailing groups which Phil
was in. They all worked well together but Phil was tired due to the amount of
work he was doing on the front. One of the lads who were sitting in decided to
go for an attack (pointless decision) and it split the group up. He did get
reeled back in but the group was well split by this time. Phil could not hold
on and went round the rest of the race on his own. The main pack lapped
Stuart’s group with a lap to go. We left them to finish the race and fight for
the top positions. Phil stopped short of the finishing line so didn’t get a
final position. 19 riders started. Final results below.

The valley through St Mary Bourne
wasn’t too bad but once we got to
Stuart and Andy reckoned the worst
of the roads were over and would carry on and see how it went. The rest of the
ride went well with the roads being icy in places. We had to laugh though when
some Nutter went shooting down Coombe hill and fell off when he hit an icy
patch, but the funny thing was he got back on his bike and did it again. He got
back on his bike again went two metres then his tyre blow out, I had to say
‘Your not having a good day, are you?’ as I past him. I don’t think he was too
impressed.
The Watership Down hill was steep
and a little bit icy, Stuart had to get off and push his bike up it a bit of
the way. Andy showed true climbing technique staying on his bike the whole way,
I recon it’s just because he needs to loose a few pounds!!! We fell off 2 times
on the way back to the HQ, but it was just silly little mistakes going along at
about 2mph on ice. We got back to the HQ having done 83miles within 6 hours and
looking forward to soup, tea and cakes. We found out we were one of the few
groups out of the Audax to do the complete ride, the rest either packed or
stuck to the main roads. Both were sensible decisions to make.
We had our soup and headed on our

Salisbury Plain
Challenge 2003
There can't be many cycling events
which benefit from freezing temperatures and icy conditions but after weeks of
torrential rain the prospect of several hours on Salisbury Plain in knee deep
mud was daunting! Thank God (literally!) for the plummeting thermometer over
Saturday night which made for ideal racing conditions by Sunday. The ground was
solid and the wind was still which kept the air temperature to a comfortable -4
degrees C, even Phil felt inclined to drag himself out of bed for the event.

The event attracted over 1,000
riders and it was superbly organised as usual. The start is always exciting
with about 800 riders "champing at the bit" to be off but held back
by a line of motor cycles for a rolling start. Nick managed to push right to
the front and it was the only time he was ahead of Phil. The first long hill
soon strung the field out and Eric was the first to draw level and pass Nick to
the merry sound of a tinkly bell. There was an amazing number of punctures on
the first flinty track and some very cross riders frantically changing tubes.
About hour and a half later Mike
met up with Nick who was convinced at that time (falsely) that he had a
puncture. Nick and Mike decided to take the wimps route down "suicide
hill" but marveled at the acrobatics of those (fools) who chanced their
luck. Some wheel sucking road skills were handy on the road sections before the
long grind up from Warminster. The rough track down to the wood section was
challenging (scary!). The transition from bright sunshine to dark and dingy
woods was unexpected as the wonderful "3km to go" sign appeared. Nick
celebrated by falling off and watched Mike disappear towards the finish.
A great day, great conditions and
a great race. Well done Emma for a faultless first time 50km and well done
Chazz for representing AW juniors.

The
dreaded first club run after Christmas!!!! by Knight Rider
Most people know me Ian
"terminator" Knight, been around the wheelers as long as the Fosters,
22nd year I think now, cant work that out as I have just renewed my espoir
racing license.
Like most people I have until
recently been a lazy fat git and not even gone out my motorbike let alone my
push bike, as most will know I have used the excuse of a long awaited hospital
visit as my reason for not riding, no more excuses I am like Arnie in the
Terminator I always said I'll be back..
Anyway as the title suggests I had
to go out on my first club run for about 150 years, only 6 other people turned
up, I think I ought to tell you about the type of people that go out.
Mike Risdale, he was still trying
to light that last ciggie before we left, its lucky he's not fast or he would
have to stop to light the damn things, what makes it worse you know how much
Mike wobbles when he rides just imagine him trying to roll his own, you really
ought to give up Mike it could kill us all, anyway he was on his racing bike,
he heard I was going out and was in fear I would drop him, I will soon coz I'm
BACK!!!!!!
There was Nick Adnitt, haven't
known him long but he did seem to get a bit excited and kept racing to the top
of any hill, the last time I saw Nick ride away from me was in the Weyhill
weekend I did and "8" thing was he only did a "4" just
shows why I have started my training in January rather than like last year in
September, but I didn't want to burn out and the 2 up was in October, you wont
do a "4" and beat me by 4 mins again Nick coz I'm BACK!!!!!
Of course Jake Prior, although
Jake plays his cards tight to his chest, everyone knows Jake is always riding
at 50%, well that was how it was when I went by him coming back down from
Popham in the 25 2 years ago, see it does pay to be fat and heavy, I think I
upset him that day and he still has not forgiven me, he waited for me over the
last 3 hills, and guess what I was suffering and you guessed it Jake was riding
at 50%, you have to up the percentage soon Jake coz I'm BACK!!!!!
There was Roger Hartnell,
evergreen Roger, always there riding at the same annoying speed uphill downhill
or into the wind, but last year he wanted a year out, he had seen how I had
used it to my advantage, you know get injured, do no training and beat Mick Ris
he decided to copy me, a plan was hatched the Rog and Ris stunt team were born,
the rest as they say is history, thing is Rog, you are gonna have to go faster
downhill coz I'm BACK!!!!!!
No club run would be complete
without my old yeah that's right OLD mate Paul "roundabout" Welch,
last time I rode properly with Paul it was the gentleman's 2 up, and I am sure
he was only using it to train for the Paris Brest Paris, A zillion mile over 4
days in France, he is mad but boy he is so slow on anything that involves going
around ie roundabouts, thing is Paul brakes are for emergencies not bloody
roundabouts, still we did a "4" not bad but next year Welchy, under
the hour, I will snip your cables and I reckon we can gain back those 5 minutes
on the roundabouts, you best do all of those Audax's your gonna need the miles
coz I'm BACK!!!!!!
And lastly someone who I don't
know a bloke call Phil, I think he only went out for some milk this morning,
well probably the weeks shopping looking at the size of his panniers, he must
have heard I was going out, I reckon he'd taken the murphys and crisps with
him, if only he had called me first I would have told him not to bother I had
loads and loads and loads on Friday night, well that stops now, I am on the
wagon well except the red wine if Johan Museew can then so can I, anyway Phil
nice thought but you don't need the panniers anymore coz I'm BACK!!!!!!!
That's the people what about the
ride I hear you cry, we did somewhere between 55-60 miles, no tea stop!!, they
made me ride on the front apparently I gave the most shelter, the route
Alresford, Winchester, Stockbridge was an interesting one with roads I had
never been on before, but all in all, I had a great laugh with my friends, even
though they were reminding me how lazy I had been, they don't say anything to
you but you can see the evil in their eyes as they power up the hills and get
in your way on the downhills.
Well not really, it was a moderate
run that my Granny could have managed, but then she is 2 years younger than me
(21), I never thought that strange until I found my Mum was the same age, a
great run that anyone could manage at a realistic pace, thanks lads hope to see
you next week, COZ I AM BACK!!!!!
