Andover Wheelers 2003 Christmas Club run and Free Wheel event

The event was held on Sunday 21st December 2003. About twenty riders turned up some in fancy dress, many with decorated bikes. We rode for about one and a half hours and then congregated at the top of the free wheel hill. Simon Foster has dominated this event for the last sixteen years and was hot favorite to win again thanks to his distinctive aerodynamic style.

The tandem of Nick and Chazz Adnitt took an early lead and they dismounted and waited for any other riders to pass. Then along came Eric Wilcock. He'd clearly been watching Simon over the last few years and by imitating his style, cruised by. Last to go was Simon looking as smooth as ever.

Once he had passed all the stationary riders, they made their way to the pub. It was only during the first pint that we learnt that at last Simon had been defeated and Eric was the new freewheel king. Some say that a strong gust of wind sprang up when Eric set off, some say it was the hand of God that propelled him that day, but Simon will be back for revenge next year so Eric's got a lot of training to do.

The Weyhill Fair once again provided the riders with hot roast potatoes, chips and hot mince pies.

Salisbury Plain Challenge 2004

Nick Adnitt was the sole rider from the Wheelers this year in a grueling 50km race across Salisbury Plain, another excellent event organised by S.P.A.M. After a good start comfortably in the first 50 riders, he broke his chain after about 25 minutes. Luckily Tom Pooley was marshalling and soon got Nick going again with a new chain and link, to finish 33rd out of 166 veterans in a time of 2:54:07.

Stockbridge Challenge 2004

Lee won the Stockbridge Challenge 2004 again. After last year's -2 degree ice race it was very different conditions this time as recent wet and warm weather made for a mud bath. Emma White made a return to off-road since recovering from a broken collar bone and is all set for the first Gorrick at the end of January.
