Thursday 1st February –
Andover Wheelers unveil new kit designs.
The club is pleased and proud to announce the unveiling of kit designs for the new Andover Wheelers kit being supplied for the 2007 season onwards. The kit is to be made by Italian company Jollywear through an agreement organised by Harry Lodge. The Wheelers will be the first domestic club in the UK to be supplied clothing by Jollywear.
An initial order has been placed for a small number of items of clothing in a range of sizes, which the club hopes will be available for members to see and buy by the time of the first Club TT in April. The items in this order should give members a good idea of sizing and fit prior to placing their own orders. In particular, Italian cycling clothing is labeled with sizing much larger than the UK, e.g. a UK Large is equivalent to an Italian XXL! Subsequent orders will then be placed with Jollywear as members decide which items and sizes they require.
For more details and for placing orders for new kit, please contact Jake Prior. N.B. All kit orders must be paid for at the time of ordering.

Sunday 4th March – Simon Foster wins first silverware of the season.
Simon Foster was recently presented with the Steve Coates Trophy - awarded to the rider who rode the most events in the Wessex League Cyclo-Cross season.
In Simon's own words.....
Here is a picture from the Wessex CX presentation evening. I'm pictured
with Paul Coates (Steve's dad) and Elaine Coates (Steve's sister).
I was presented with the Steve Coates Trophy by his sister Elaine. It was
awarded for the first time in memory of Steve who sadly died out on his bike
last year aged 32.
I had known and raced with Steve for many years and he was at my very 1st cross
some 17 years ago. The week before he had died he was out with the Wheelers on
our Sunday club run.
Here is and extract from the programme note written by Kerrie Wallace the
league secretary:-
A sad note for the old hands of Cyclo
Cross was that during last summer Stephen Coates, a multiple Wessex Race
Winner, passed to those far off training grounds, no doubt still looking for
the longest and steepest hills. To remember him, his Father, Paul Coates, has
donated a Trophy, which reflecting Stephens outlook on life in that he never
gave up and competed in everything that was going, no matter the conditions or
location, will be awarded to the Wessex rider who competes in the most Wessex
events during the season. The first fitting winner of this Trophy is Simon
Foster of the Andover Wheelers. Simon raced and trained with Stephen as young
men and Simon set his seasons goals on receiving the Trophy, in true Stephens
spirit, Simon has raced in every Wessex League event, as well as the South of
England and National Championships, giving up his holidays to achieve his
goal.
I was particularly proud to receive this as I'd been working with Phil this
year and Steve had been Phil’s best mate for many years.
The trophy was awarded to the rider in the Wessex league who rode the most
events in the season. It was open to all age categories. I managed to complete
all 14 Wessex League events as well as the South of England Championships
(14th) and the National Championships (55th) and finally finished 23rd in the
League.
Andover Wheelers team managed to finish 9th in the team classification with 214
points. (Simon 23rd, 118 points; Phil Bowley 34th, 60 points; Nick Adnitt 38th,
36 points).
My daughter Emily also picked up her certificate for finishing 13th and 4th
girl in the under 12 cross league

Sunday 4th March – Max Webber gets a great 6th place in his first
ever road circuit race.
14 year old Max Webber competed in his first ever road circuit race recently
at the Hillingdon cycle circuit in Hayes, West London. The Finchley Racing Team
promoted event was held in sunny but windy conditions and had a field of about
20 youth riders. Straight from the gun, the field split into two even groups
with Max looking comfortable in the leading group of 10 riders. 2 riders then
broke away off the front which further reduced the chasing group down to 4
riders, including Max, and were working well together but couldn't claw back
the leading 2 riders. Max got tailed off towards the end to finish alone but in
a solid and satisfactory 6th place and is now looking forward to the up and
coming Thruxton Circuit races.

Sunday 11th March – 2-up teams do the
double!
Andover Wheelers teams doubled up at the Alton CC 2-up and Tandem 20mile TT events at Bentley this weekend. Simon Foster and Lizzy Yates won the tandem 20 event in a time of 50.47mins while Phil Bowley and Dave Dinsdale won the 2-up in a time of 44.49mins.
It was a nippy morning but sunny with a nagging south westerly wind making the outward and final legs hard going. The tandem pair managed to win their event from another mixed pair by 5 mins 27 seconds!
Dave did really well to hang on to Phil for 20 miles after feeling unwell the night before! They managed to beat a strong pairing from NHRC by 14 seconds.
A good start to the season for all!
Monday 12th March – Nick Adnitt goes back to school!
Nick Adnitt recently went back to school with a visit to the juniors at Vigo
School to teach them all about cycling. Click on the thumbnail to view the

Sunday 18th March – Max Webber continues his good road racing form
Young Andover Wheeler, Max Webber, competed in the first in a series of
cycle races at the local Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit. In a strong field of 19
Youth A (U16's) riders, it was always going to be a competitive race but it was
made even tougher by the strong winds on the exposed circuit. As in his
previous race, Max found himself in the front group of 9 riders who broke away
immediately. Working well together, the group was soon well clear of the rest
and because of the windy conditions they all stayed together and waited for the
final lap to make their move for victory. The final drag up to the chicane and
finish line was particularly tough and it was more a case of elimination from
the group as, one by one, riders were dropped from the lead pack. The race was
won by John Hobbs of 'Hillingdon Slipstreamers' with Max finishing in a
creditable 8th place.
The feature race of the day was the Elite/1st/2nd category riders and included
some quality local riders. With the strong wind still playing a big part in
race tactics, it was former Andover Wheeler Neil Coleman who broke away with
three other riders on the first lap and never looked back! Another group of 4
riders including local rider Justin Hoy (Felt Racing Team), tried to chase down
the leaders but it was always going to be tough ask in the conditions. Coleman,
who now spends much of his time racing in America for the 'A & F Pro
Development Cycling Team', crossed the line 1st to win the race overall and Hoy
outsprinted his group for a 5th place finish. Andover Wheeler, Phil Bowley,
also rode strongly to finish in an excellent 14th position.

Sunday 1st April – Stuart Thompson completes the Round The Harbour TT
Stuart Thompson competed in the Poole Wheelers Hilly 28 mile Time Trial on Sunday the 1st of April. OK he came 5th last out of 31, but what a course! It could have been an Audax! The course takes you from Poole to Wareham then past Corfe Castle to start climbing towards Studland to see the sea views (waving at all the Dorset Coast Audax riders coming the other way!). Then finally, he had to get the Ferry back across to the HQ! Stuart said: "It was brilliant and I recommend it to anyone. OK a slow time but I will be giving Pete Harris a run for his money on Wednesday nights!!"
Sunday 1st April – Max Webber at the double!
Max Webber competed in his most successful races so far when he scored two
2nd places this weekend. The first race was down at the Mountbatten Centre in
Portsmouth and saw Max and his breakaway partner lap the entire field! Once
they were back in the bunch it was a case of keeping an eye on each other
before the final sprint for the line but, although gaining all the time, Max
wasn’t quite able to come round his rival and had to settle for 2nd place.
The following day saw Max compete at the local Thruxton Motor Racing circuit.
The confidence gained from his previous days efforts saw Max break away from
the bunch with two other riders, quickly gaining ground on the other
competitors. The three riders started working well together in the blustery
conditions but, after Max had done a long turn at the front, one of the leading
riders broke away on his own to take the victory. Max continued to work hard
with his remaining breakaway partner to stay away from the bunch and took
another excellent 2nd place in the sprint for the line.

Sunday 1st April – Adrian Slack gains first BC licence points of the
season
In the same Thruxton event on Sunday, Adrian Slack competed in the 4th Cat
circuit race. The blustery conditions made for a slower tempo race that offered
little opportunity for the various attempted breakaways from the bunch to
succeed and so after 10 laps the race came down to a bunch sprint. Despite
having to avoid 2 riders coming together in the final chicane before the finish
straight, Adrian managed to hold his place in the sprint and came in 6th from a
field of approximately 50 riders.

Monday 9th April – A Good Friday for Wheelers youngsters
The following article was submitted to the Andover Advertiser by Mike Webber:
Some of the top young cyclists from the south of
15 year old Max Webber also competed at Castle Coombe in his toughest race so
far this season. In a top quality field of over 20 riders Max had to use all of
his ability and bike handling skills to stay in contention in a very attacking
race. Although many riders tried to breakaway, the sheer speed of the bunch
always brought them back and it was left to a hectic sprint for the line down
the long home straight. Max found himself in a good position with 200 metres to
go and was able to finish in a creditable 10th place.
The Wheelers had their first evening time trial recently on the 8.7 mile
Monxton circuit. Held in dry, sunny but chilly conditions, it was a chance for
many riders to gauge their early season fitness. Fastest on the night was Phil
Bowley with an excellent time of 19mins 30secs. Ian Knight showed some good
form with a personal best time for the course to take second place in 20mins
52secs and he was closely followed by Adrian Slack in third place with a time
of 21mins 5secs.

Monday 21st May - Webbers at the double!
Young Andover Wheeler, Max Webber, had another successful race when he
competed in the Edgware RC cycle circuit races at Hillingdon in
The event also saw Max's younger brother, Mitchell, enter into his first ever
competitive race. Competing in the U12's category race, Mitchell initially
struggled to come to terms with the quick start to the race but, not wanting to
be outdone by his elder brother, he battled on strongly to eventually overtake
all but one of the other U12 riders and finish in a more than satisfactory 2nd
place! With the points even in the sibling rivalry both Max & Mitchell went
home happy with their afternoons work!

Monday
28th May - Cameron Thompson takes first win!
This weekend saw three young Andover Wheelers race at the wet and windy
Castle Coombe circuit near Chippenham. Star of the day was 9 year old Cameron
Thompson who battled against the elements to score a fabulous victory! Young
Cameron allowed his fellow competitors to do the early racing before attacking
on the long drag at the far end of the circuit and riding alone to the finish.
13 year old Tom Bolton was riding in only his second ever U14's race and showed
that he is an emerging talent. His race split almost straight away and Tom
could have quite easily waited to ride with other competitors. But he bravely
pushed on alone and pulled away from the other riders to finish in an excellent
2nd place! Max Webber was competing in the main U16's race and showed that he
is ever improving. With some of the top riders in the area competing it was
always going to be a fast, attacking race but Max held his own to get in the
leading break of seven riders. Lots more attacking followed but no one else
managed to get away and it was left to a fast downhill sprint for the line. Max
gave it his all but didn't quite have the speed to come round his rivals and
finished in a solid 6th place.

Stuart Thompson was racing too in the 3rd Cat race. Stuart went from the
word go putting in a surprise attack but got caught after only 1 lap. About
half way through the race Thompson put another attack in and managed to stay
away for 3 laps but got caught again. There was nothing else for it but to wait
for the sprint. Thompson finished a respectable 3rd out of 23 gaining 7 points
to his licence.

Sunday 1st July - Max Webber
wins GHS
Max Webber scored his best win to date when he took his first time trial
victory in the GHS South DC Final recently. The 10 mile event is for riders who
are 16 years old or younger and was based on an out and back course to the south
of Ringwood. The GHS event was run alongside a Bournemouth Arrow CC evening
time trial on 26th June and although the conditions were bright there was a
strong wind facing the riders on the outward leg of the course. Max, riding a
specific time trial bike, was the 4th rider to start and had the added pressure
of having the fastest rider on paper starting a minute behind him. But he was
soon into his stride, overtaking two of the three riders in front of him before
the turn, and it was clear that he was on a ride when he reached the turn more
than two minutes ahead of his closest rival. With the wind now behind him, Max
powered back to the finish line to win in a time of 25mins 15secs with a
massive winning margin of 3mins 43secs over the second placed rider! Such was
the quality of the youngster's ride, his time was only 45 seconds behind the
fastest adult competitor and 6th fastest time on the night. In winning this
event, Max has now qualified for the National GHS Final which is taking place

The club 25 mile time trial championship, which also incorporated the
Handicap 25 event, was held tonight on the Popham course (P612) on a warm sunny
evening with a tough headwind blowing on the return leg. Of the 11 competing
riders, 10 were from the Wheelers and it was Adrian Slack who came home in a
winning time of 59:15, the only rider to go under the hour on the night, to
take the scratch event and with it the Andover Advertiser trophy. It was also
his first club event win. Stuart Thompson came in

Wednesday 1st August - Foxcotte circuit tryout
On Thursday 26th July, several Wheelers took part in a reconnaissance mission to try out a newly-devised 8.5 mile course based on the roads around Foxcotte, Hatherden and Tangley! In dark and blustery conditions all riders successfully completed the route and enjoyed the chance to ride a new course. The course might now be used in future club events, subject to a few amendments.

Thursday 2nd August - Come and Try It event - a great success
The Come & Try It event was held with great success on Thursday night,
and despite heavy showers before the start, a fantastic turnout of 37
enthusiastic riders took part in the time trial in mainly sunny and dry
conditions. For those who thought that the finish line might never come (don't
we all!), the course was actually extended on the night to 5.6 miles from the
original 4.9 miles to ensure rider safety by placing the finish line at a safer
location. So pat yourselves on the back for doing an extra 0.7 miles further
than you thought! All results are now available by following the link below,
including a chance for riders to compare their times against an Andover
Wheeler, and the winner of the TdF Prologue 2007 itself, Fabian Cancellara!
Many thanks to all those who participated, it was great to see such a huge
turnout. And thanks to all those who volunteered and gave up their time to put
on an excellent event. Andover Wheelers wish you continued good cycling and
look forward to seeing you again at a Come & Try It or club event in the
future.....

Sunday 5th August - Wheelers go 2-up at Farnham
Two Andover Wheelers teams today competed in the Farnham RC open 2-up time
trial event on the H20/8 course based on a single 20-mile loop of the A31
Bentley bypass. In hot and sunny early morning conditions, the first Wheelers
team to ride was a mixed team of Simon Foster and Lizzie Yates, competing in their
first 2-up event together. They finished with a very respectable time of 53
minutes 16 seconds, finishing in 12th position. The second Wheelers team
comprised of Dave Dinsdale and Adrian Slack, also teaming up for the first time
together. With some strong turns at the front by Dinsdale, and Slack also
pushing the pace on occasions, they finished with a good time of 45 minutes 26
seconds to put them 4th overall, just 14 seconds away from a place in the top
three. The event was won by local riders Jake Prior and Rowan Horner from the
VC St Raphael team in 42 minutes 34 seconds to come out on top of the 13 teams
that competed.

Sunday 2nd September - Hill Climb Championship
Andover Wheelers held their final Championship event of the season when 8 riders competed for the Hill Climb Trophy. Held on the short but steep climb of Ham Hill to the north of Vernham Dean, this event is always one of the toughest on the club's calender. With a head wind facing each rider the course record was not under threat and new member, Steve Murphy, was the first to tackle the climb in an excellent time of 2mins 23secs. Comeback rider Mark Skeates was next to finish in 2mins 21secs closely followed by the only female competitor, Lizzy Yates, in 2mins 45secs. Next on the climb was youngster Daniel Hobson but he had Simon Foster a minute behind him a closing fast! Foster was nursing various cuts and grazes after a recent crash but loves the hill climb challenge and caught Hobson on the steepest section 50 metres from the top and went on to take the lead with a time of 1min 42secs. Young Daniel battled on bravely to finish in 2mins 51secs. Mick Risdale tried and failed to beat the top time in 2mins 23secs and it was down to either Dave Dinsdale and Mike Webber to knock Foster off the top spot. Dinsdale, the clubs leading time triallist, took part on his low profile time trial bike and looked to be slightly overgeared in recording 1min 50secs and it was down to Webber to try and overcome the top time. Riding his first event of the year, Webber had to use all his experience to ride the hill but it wasn't quite enough, finishing 4 secs short of Foster's time in 1min 46secs but good enough for a very satisfying second place! So Simon Foster held on to win the Hill Climb Championship again but what made the ride even more special was it emerged a few days later that he was also riding with a fractured elbow!

Monday 1st October - Young Wheelers in National Youth Circuit Series
The recent Thruxton Circuit cycle races saw 4 young Andover Wheelers
race against some of the top youngsters in the country. The Wheelers had a
rider in each age group with Cameron Thompson (U10), Mitchell Webber (U12), Tom
Bolton (U14) and Max Webber (U16) in what was the latest round of the National
Youth Circuit Series. Thruxton is always a very open circuit but
a nagging headwind up to the final chicane made it extremely hard going for all
the competitors. Cameron Thompson was first off and proved that his top ten
placing in the the U10's National rankings was no fluke by finishing in a
determined 9th place. Mitchell Webber, in the U12's, was initially held up by a
crash early on in his race but battled back well to find himself in a group of
4 other riders. They all worked well together in trying to chase down the
leading riders but ran out of time leaving Mitchell in a creditable 14th
position. Tom Bolton showed he has plenty of potential at U14's level when
he finished in an excellent 16th position. Although Tom hasn't done as much
racing as the rest of the Wheelers youngsters, he settled in with the large
bunch like he had been doing it all season. The main pack split up over the
final lap but Tom fought out a great sprint to finish the race well. For 15
year old Max Webber, this was his second National Youth series event that he
had entered this season. The last round at

Saturday 3rd November - Points League Results 2007
The Elite, A, B and C league is run over the coarse of the year where riders accumulate points on the Wednesday night races. Riders are split into groups depending on there ability and were they were placed in the League the year before, gaining points for turning up and riding the evening events. Points are awarded from 10, for the quickest rider to 1, who is the slowest in each category. Basically if you turn up for all the events there is a good chance you could win your category regardless of cycling ability. The rider with the most points in each category wins a surprise prize at the end of the year and will also be promoted up to the next category if there is one for the next year. Please note that the C League is only for Women, Juniors under 16 and novices. The results can be found here.

Thursday 22nd November - Two ups
These pictures are from a very soggy and windy Bournemouth & District Womens Cycling Association 2 up 10 mile time trial on 18th Aug. Simon Foster and Lizzie Yates did a 27.51 and won the vets on standard prize with a plus of 1.00min. They recently collected the award at the BDWCA prize evening.
They then went on to ride the vets 2 up on 7th October. The Wheelers had 3 teams taking part with Ian & Harry and Max & Mike. It was a cold morning with an easterly breeze. Simon and Lizzie were first away followed 4 minutes later by the Webbers and 4 minutes after that was Ian and Harry. Simon and Lizzie were hoping to stay away from both pairs, but half expected to get caught. They settled into a good rhythm and when they got to the first turn there was nothing between them and the Webbers, if anything they were slightly up! It stayed like that throughout the 3 laps as they gradually increased the advantage.
Ian and Harry meanwhile were flying along and managed
to catch Max and Mike. As Simon and Lizzie
approached the finish they thought a 4 might be on but in sprinting for the
line Simon pulled his foot out and they finished in 1.05.00, 9 minutes quicker
than Lizzie had been all year!
Now they waited to see what Mike and Max had done,
1.05.56 was the answer. In all fairness, put them on tri-bars and Max on
full gears and it could well have been reversed They
were pleased to keep away from both the Wheelers teams.

Friday 30th November - Simon Foster to compete in Southern Cyclo Cross Championships
Startsheet and details can be found here.
Wednesday 19th December - Simon Foster competes in Southern Cyclo Cross Championships
In Simon's own words:
"Well, I survived the cross champs. Felt as if I was fairly strong and rode quite well to finish in 19th.
I didn't seem to have the zip in my legs like last year.
The weather held off though the race was run in very strong wind, but I was still in shorts and short sleeves!!
It was a hard and grueling race and I was pleased to still be making places on the last lap and felt strong."
