VC VENTA THRUXTON CIRCUIT RACES

The Winchester based cycling club, V.C.Venta (Wessex Window Systems) held their first event of the year at Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit on Saturday 2nd March. The day was again a tremendous success, with 196 riders in total, aged from under 8 to veteran, competing on a sunny day with a very cold biting wind.

The first events were the youth races, open to all under 16 riders. Matthew Legg (Palmer Park Velo) won the under 10 event, ahead of Kier Deíath (Palmer Park Velo) and Richard Barlow (Palmer Park Velo). Sam Serruya (Palmer Park Velo) won the under 12 event, ahead of Chris Legg (Palmer Park Velo) and Sophie Terry (Bognor Regis C.C.) who finished in third place. The under 14 event was won by Morgan Iley (Somer Valley C.C.), second went to Sam Weeks (Somer Valley C.C.) and third was Sophie Reynolds (Palmer Park Velo). The under 16ís was won by Philip Gough (Portswood Cycles R.T.), second was Izak Van Coller (Off the Record/Velocity) and third was Tom Brookes (Somer Valley CC).

The Junior event was won in an impressive sprint by Seb Ottley (V.C. St Raphael/Waite Contracts), second was Tim Stubbs (V.C.Venta/Wessex Window Systems), Adam Slade (Hantspol C.C.) finished in third place. The 4th category race was won by Stephen Marchant (Swindon R.C.), second was Mile Osborne (Pulse 8) and third was Barry Clewett (BCF Private Member). The first lady finisher was Sara Dias (Army CU). Stephen Marchant was also the first vet finisher in the race.

In the 3rd category race, a small break away early in the race was reduced to one lone rider with 16km to go; Ben Luckwell (F.S. Maestro). He managed to stay away from a huge bunch containing the rest of the field of 65 riders to take first place. Second place was taken in a bunch sprint by Philip Mean (North Hampshire RC.) and third by Philip Jacobs (Andover Wheelers). The first vet finisher was Garry Clarke (Evans R.T.) who finished in fourth place overall.

In the feature race of the day, the Elites/1st & 2nd category race, an early break away of 11 riders stayed away to the finish with the sprint for the line being taken by James Taylor (City of Edinburgh R.C/Clarkes Contracts/Continental), second was Dave Baker (PCAñCiclosUno) and third was Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow/Fircroft Hotel). Steve Moss was also the best placed vet in the race
